Minamisanriku Volunteer Weekend - Tohoku Food Marathon and Festival
ANZCCJ, Australian Embassy Tokyo, and Club Australia are partnering once again to organise our annual Tohoku Volunteer Weekend trip to Minami Sanriku.
The main event will be the Tohoku Food Marathon and Festival on Sunday 19 March. The marathon is officially supported by the world-famous Medoc Marathon in France and aims to bring people to the Tohoku region to assist with its economic recovery through the restoration of agriculture and service industries. The boost to the economy in 2016 was estimated at over 200 million yen.
The marathon has something for everyone, with a full and half marathon for those seeking the challenge, to a 5km fun run and a 500m run for kids.
As an alternative activity to the marathon, Club Australia will be organising Street Rugby matches for locals and visitors (and their children) in a grassed area at the festival on Sunday. This activity will be a fun way to learn a little about Rugby and Australian and New Zealand culture.
And for those who wish to be volunteers, there will still be plenty of work to do in support of the runners and/or Club Australia.
On the Saturday, a guided tour of Minamisanriku will show participants around one of the towns that was most severely affected by the tsunami in 2011. Tour participants will be able to hear directly from survivors about their experience during the disasters.
We look forward to your participation!
