NSW Government announces departure of Investment and Trade Commissioner in Japan

15 Dec 2016

The NSW Government Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC) announced the recent retirement of Mr Geoffrey Walker, who held responsibility for the NSW Investment and Trade office in Japan from 2013. Mr Walker left DPC in November.

The Director of the International Network Branch at DPC, Mr Na-aim Abdie, said that Mr Walker had made an invaluable contribution to the work of NSW Government in Japan, and wished him well in future endeavours.

Mr Abdie announced that Mr David Carlow, who joined the Tokyo office as the new Investment and Trade Lead in Japan in August 2016, would manage the operations of the Tokyo office from 1 December 2016 until a new Commissioner is appointed.

Mr Carlow joined DPC from Wireless Marketing Lab, where he served as the Marketing Director and New Business Engagement Lead for parent company WirelessGate Inc., Japan’s first mobile virtual network operator (MVNO).  Previously, Mr Carlow worked in senior management roles across Australian Government, including positions at the Commonwealth Ombudsman, the Department of Industry, Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, and Department of Education, Science and Training.

Mr Carlow said he was looking forward to the opportunity to lead the direction of in-market work.

“Having spent many years working in both Australia and Japan, in both the government and private sectors, I am really happy now to be applying that total experience to the work and interests of NSW Government. This is an exciting time to be in DPC and I look forward to leading a highly-energised operation in an important market”, Mr Carlow said.

Japan remains the world’s third largest economy, NSW’s number one destination for merchandise exports and NSW’s second largest source of direct foreign investment. The NSW-Japan relationship continues to represent a significant benefit to NSW and the economy.
